I’ve become invisible
walking on crowded sidewalks
where no one sees me
and I see them
less and less, too.
High-rise apartments
layers of life that
do not see one another
though they pass daily
never making eye contact
no smile or kind word
do they exchange.
Rocking chairs on Granny’s porch
shelling peas, sipping iced tea
chatting with neighbors
as they walked by
sometimes they’d stop
sit a spell, eat some apple pie.
We’v become invisible now
looking down at cell phones
missing clouds shaped like bunnies
too lost, too afraid
to see each other
we drift through life
like ships lost at sea.
