Teenage Lament

I want to be
like other people
one of the crowd
just the same
yet I am uniquely me
just trying to learn
the acceptance fame

She spends hours
in front of her mirror
painting a face that’s
just the same
clothes rejected
are scattered everywhere
not good enough
to play the game

The best part of growing older
is when I learned how
to play the game
then realized I did not have to
and quit trying
to be the same

Now I’m me
and that’s just fine
aging well
like a good bottle of wine

    I’m unique
    And I discovered
    It’s okay to be
    Uniquely you
    Especially when age
    You didn’t know
    Begins to – you know-
    Neek up on you!
