Fraudulent Relief

We seek relief in the fraudulent
fool ourselves that we are happy
yet our discontent lurks in the corners
like an uninvited guest
so we drink another drink
take a new lover
work more hours
to buy more stuff
we neither needed no wanted
all the while
being the life–of-the-party
while remaining captured
in the well of nothingness.

A prisoner of our own making
we ignore the call within
to come to the Light
to choose love over
self-centeredness
compassion, not greed
gratitude instead of complaint.

Yet, God is patient
loving us until we are ready
to love ourselves
and each other.

Great is the mercy
of our Lord.
