Beast of Pride

“Only self can kill joy”
Am I the one doing this to me?
a clutched fist
can receive no more
while a palm opened
in humble surrender
receives the joyous
Light of the Divine.

Joy is snuffed out in greed
anger suffocates this holy flame
leaving her lifeless
when I demand my own will
its force kills all joy.

O Beast of Pride
take off your mask of anger
self-righteousness
O Killer of Gratitude
who always thinks
he deserves more.

What do I think
I deserve that I don’t
have right now?
