Stone Walls

Pile another stone
on the wall
home to vines, lizards, spiders
stone piled upon stone
as he clears the field
where tall stalks of corn
will soon wave in warm breezes.

He looks at the wall
built stone by stone
reaching higher and higher
yet he cannot seem to make
himself stop so great is his need
to keep others out
never realizing that this wall
also keeps him in
until finally, the last stone in place
he sees he did not leave
a space for a gate.
