The Circus

Ringling Brothers’ Circus
is closing
setting the animals free
generations have paid
to see animals do tricks
ignoring the rolling cages
where they are stuffed
after the Big Top comes down.

Let the animals go
set them free
to be what God
made them to be.

Give them back
their natural habitats
forests lush, with green
open plains to roam
as they did not so long ago.

The circus is leaving
no more freaks to entertain
bearded ladies, dwarfs, fat men
where will they go?
Who will love them
give them work
invite them to tea
when the circus closes?
