Families Gather

Holiday lights
sparkle in the trees
families gather
children play with cousins
aunts and uncles rock
in white cane rockers
waiting in anticipation
of tantalizing aromas
coming from Grandma’s kitchen.

It is the time before
we gathered at the table
that I remember well
a time of laughter and tales
as we waited for the holiday meal.

How I miss the joy
of those days when
families came first
squabbles were laid to rest
the only thing left to decide
was which pie one liked best.
