Jonah and the Whale

If Jonah was in the whale’s belly
today, he’d be appalled at what he saw
the detritus of mankind
barges of garbage
oil slicks
pollution poisoning all.

Jonah would cry tears
of disbelief
as do I when I see
our destruction

In just my lifetime
clean waters, vast forests
only a childhood memory.
Like Jonah, I weep tears
of disbelief at our greed
and indifference
and wonder how
the story will end.
